Hangouts is a messenger app, developed by Google and released in 2013. The app allows us to participate in individual and group chats, make phone and video calls, and send SMS messages.
Functionality: Basic 3/5
The app has more or less the same basic features as most messengers. You can create chats with up to 150 participants, make audio and video calls with up to 10 people, call to phone numbers, send online or SMS messages, and share content within your chats. Most users report that the essential features work correctly, though Hangouts lacks some other apps' features. For example, there is no search by message feature, no option to share music or other files, and there is no online/offline status of your interlocutor.
Design: Googly 5/5
The app is developed and managed by Google and corresponds to the company's design standards. There are stylish icons for most features, the fonts are pleasing to the eye, and the colors are picked nicely. The app utilizes green and white colors, mostly, which is a little similar to WhatsApp's design, but it still looks good. As usual for Google, the design is rather minimalistic, pretty attractive, and very functional, as there are no useless buttons, and the interface is not overloaded.
Usability: User Friendly 5/5
As for usability, Hangouts is a very user-friendly app. It does not have a lot of features, though the ones available are very easy to use. The interface allows you to switch between different chats quickly, and the buttons for essential features are located exactly where you would expect them to be. The app is comfortable to use even if you are new to chatting, so the usability is almost perfect.
Cross-platform use: Synchronized 4/5
Hangouts are available for PC, Android, and iOS and offer to synchronize all your chats. For desktop, there are two options available: you can either download a separate app or install an extension for the Chrome browser. However, Google is soon fully replacing the app with the extension. This might be comfortable for many users, as you need only a few seconds to open the Hangouts page on PC.
We would recommend using Hangouts, though there might be a better choice for you. Hangouts are a nice option if you need a stable messenger and intend only to use the basic features. It is also a convenient choice for those who intend to switch between mobile and desktop versions, as most other messengers do not have comfortable desktop versions.
Pros : Large chat groups with up to 150 participants;
Basic features work properly;
Comfortable desktop client.
Cons : Lacks features if compared to other messengers.
