Skype is an app for text and video chats, initially developed by Skype Limited and later purchased by Microsoft. The app is used by 100 million people on a monthly basis and by 40 million people daily.
Functionality: Got It 4/5
Skype is a convenient chatting app, whether it is about texting or video communicating. It has various features for video chats: you can demonstrate your screen, enable recording of calls and automatic real-time subtitles, and many more. There are also features for text chats, such as attaching photographs, links or files, reacting to messages and tagging other people. With Skype, you can also call phone numbers and send SMS messages. On top of that is the security by Microsoft, which corresponds to the industry standards. The calls and chats are protected by end-to-end encryption, making the app safe.
Design: Blue and White 4/5
The visual design of Skype is more functional than beautiful. However, it is not distractive, which is a good sign. The app mostly utilizes bright backgrounds and dark text for you to recognize captions and messages easily. Most features are not captioned, there are just intuitive and minimalistic icons. Might seem inconvenient, though the icons are pretty illustrative and you always recognize what feature do they respond for.
Usability: Simple is Good 5/5
The interface is designed in a very user-friendly way. It is easy to navigate through the app, as the structure is great: you can reach almost every essential feature in several taps and swipes, not getting lost on the way. The new users will quickly get used to this app, as well. What is excellent about Skype’s user interface, is that the app offers a feature only when it is needed and puts it on a very visible spot for you to notice.
Cross-platform use: One of the Best 5/5
Skype is one of the best apps in terms of cross-platform use, as it is available on most platforms, and you can reach people, no matter what device they use. You can use the same account as well if you regularly switch between PC and mobile. Both desktop and mobile versions are extremely convenient to use, making it one of the best cross-platforming apps.
We would recommend using Skype as the main video communication app, as it offers a high level of security, excellent quality of calls, and is available on most platforms. The design is user friendly, all the necessary features are available, and the app is completely free, except for phone calls, so there are no reasons, preventing you from giving it a try.
Pros : A lot of great features from call recording to real-time subtitles;
Security standards of Microsoft;
Options to call on real phones and send SMS messages.
Cons : The quality directly depends on connection, so there might be drops and malfunctions.
